The TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment is the industry-standard qualification for individuals looking to become vocational education trainers and assessors in Australia. This course is designed for those who wish to use their industry expertise to train and assess others in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector.

Through a practical and hands-on approach, you will learn how to design engaging courses, deliver training effectively, assess learner competency, and develop assessment tools. This qualification prepares you to skill the future workforce by delivering high-quality training and assessment services.

Course outline

In the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, you will develop the knowledge and skills required to:

  • Evaluate and understand the specific needs of learners
  • Design, organise, and deliver training programs
  • Identify student needs and tailor training delivery
  • Assess learners in face-to-face and online environments
  • Develop and design assessment tools
  • Use digital platforms and workplace technologies effectively

The course is structured into four clusters:

  • Cluster 1 – Design
  • Cluster 2 – Delivery
  • Cluster 3 – Work-based and online
  • Cluster 4 – Assessment

Students can only progress to the next cluster once the current cluster is successfully completed.

Course outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be issued a TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, enabling you to deliver training services in Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), enterprises, community organisations, schools, and other VET environments.

Delivery

This course will run one day a week for 30 weeks via classroom-based face-to-face learning. Students will be expected to complete additional study at home, up to 20 hours a week, and work will be required between classes to complete the assessments. 

Commitment to attendance is essential, as failure to attend will impact progression through the course and may affect the learning experience of the rest of the class.

Assessment

Assessment methods include a portfolio of evidence, presentations, roleplays, written, oral, and practical tasks in the workplace or a simulated work environment. Assessments require significant work both during and after sessions. Students will have a maximum of three attempts per assessment, with additional attempts incurring a fee.

Pre-requisites

Students must be able to demonstrate vocational competence in your proposed training and assessing area. Vocational competence is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification. Evidence of prior industry experience or study include:

  • Copies of relevant qualifications, statements of attainment, or trade certificates.
  • A resume highlighting relevant experience in the area they wish to train and assess.
  • Completion of a pre-enrolment questionnaire to explain how their skills and experience will be applied in training and assessment.

An appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills to access, interpret, and apply nationally recognised training products, assessment policies, and procedures. This includes reading and interpreting planning documents, policies, and learning resources to identify and address learner needs. Digital literacy is required to access, share, and document information, including session plans. Writing skills are essential for preparing clear and accurate records using appropriate language and terminology. Numeracy skills are needed for estimating timeframes, scheduling tasks, and managing risks effectively.

Requirements

Students must have experience working in an industry related to their teaching area, strong communication and presentation skills, competency in digital tools such as Microsoft Office and online learning platforms, and access to a reliable computer with an internet connection and word processing software.
